Giant Ayrshire crowd basks in the show sun
The 175th Ayr County Show was a belter
Up to 10,000 people basked in the sun at the 175th Ayr County Show on Saturday.
It’s the first big Scottish show of the season and attracted farmers from across the country.
Crowd pleaser was a “majestic” Bluefaced Leicester traditional eye hogg from M& C Drummond at Cassington Farm, Maybole.
She won the Rotherwood Furniture Supreme £ 1000 prize as Champion of Champions.
The reserve was a Clauchlands Blackbird, a Holstein cow in milk, from R& M Scott at Shacklehill, Mossblown.
Rotherwood Furniture general manager Jocelyn Wilson and her sister Claire Bell presented the prizes.
Chairman Jim Mair and secretary Lorraine Murdoch were delighted at the sunny success.
Long queues formed at the beer tent as farmers sought to quench their thirst.
And the Ayrshire Agricultural Association received a blessing from Prince Charles, who was unable to attend in person, and which was broadcast to the crowd by Jim Mair.
Lorraine said: “We would like to thank everyone who helps make this event the success it is, from sponsors/ advertisers, judges/ stewards, members, stock exhibitors, trade stands and the great team of directors and committee who all work tirelessly to set up and dismantle the event.
“Special thanks to Graeme Anderson at The Ayr Racecourse and his team for helping with the groundwork and making the show ground and its surrounding a spectacle to the eye.
“Ayrshire is a county full of spirited and resourceful people, many of whom have been through difficult times; the fact that the County Show is still going strong after 175 years is a great testament to the Ayrshire character.”
