A missing man has been found dead in woods by a neighbour.

Mark McCubbin’s body was discovered following a huge police operation in Drongan on Monday.

A missing man has been found dead in woods by a neighbour outside Drongan.

Police launched a huge search for Mark McCubbin, 27, on Monday morning with the police helicopter scanning the village for more than an hour.

Mark’s body was found beside a river in a wooded area by a resident at about 5pm.

His death is not being treated as suspcious.

He was reported missing at 9.40am on Monday morning and officers searched the village and surroundin­g area speaking to family and friends to trace him.

Mark vanished after leaving his home address at Hollytree Cottage outside Drongan at about 4pm on Sunday.

He had no money or mobile phone with him and his family became worried when he didn’t come back.

During the search on Monday, a resident said: “The helicopter has been flying overhead for about an hour and a half. There are police everywhere.”

Releasing a statement during the search, Chief Inspector Gary I’Anson, Area Commander, of Ayr Police Office, said: “We know he has been dealing with some personal issues lately and as time passes, ourselves and his family are becoming extremely concerned for his wellbeing and would appeal to anyone who knows Mark, or knows of his whereabout­s to come forward and contact us.”

Later a police spokesman said: “Around 5pm on Monday May 14, the body of a man was found in a wooded area.

“A l t h o u g h f o rma l identifica­tion has still to take place, it is believed to be Mark McCubbin and his family has been informed.

“A post mortem will take place in due course and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

“A full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
