Brute dragged partner from home

- Abi Smillie

a nasty brute has been sentenced to unpaid work and supervision for his “inexcusable”assault on his partner.

steven McKnight, 37, of Benbain place in Irvine seized hold of his partner’s arm, twisted it and dragged her out of the house – in front of a child.

ayr sheriff Court heard the couple, who had been together for 14 years, began to argue on september 23, 2017.

McKnight threw a lighter at his partner, which hit her on the head leaving her with a slight cut.

He then grabbed her by the right arm, twisted it upwards and dragged her from a property in Mossblown.

the partner managed to break free, run to the front of the house where she collected their children and went to a friends house.

Defence solicitor Mr Hughes said: “the parties had been in a relationship for a number of years.

“He did have suspicions of his partner having an affair – but that doesn’t excuse his actions. “alcohol was a factor on the night. “the relationship has come to an end and he’s only seen one of his children since this.”

sheriff Carole Cunninghame told Mr Hughes:“Mr McKnight is on the brink of custody.”

turning her attention to McKnight, the sheriff added:“you’ve heard the court’s observations about custody.

“your behaviour on this night was outrageous, not to mention there was a child present.

“this is outrageous – inexcusable. “you will not subject anyone to this kind of behaviour again.”

McKnight pled guilty to assaulting his partner by throwing a cigarette lighter at her, causing it to strike her on the head; seizing hold of her arm, twisting it and dragging her from the home to her injury.

the brute was sentenced to a community payback order of two years supervision, alcohol counselling and attending the Caledonian project.

McKnight must also complete 150 hours of unpaid work and was put on a non-harassment order for two years.
