Rare Ailsa Craig cottages come up for sale at auction

-

There is a rare chance to grab a property on remote Ailsa Craig this week.

The Lighthouse Keepers Cottages have come up for auction for the first time in 20 years with a guide price of £175,000.

The island has no electricity, gas or sewage but the new owner would have right of access to two fresh water wells.

With only 70,000 birds for company and situated 10 miles from the Ayrshire coastline the cottages would offer plenty of privacy.

Advertising the opportunity, Future Property Auctions said it was “a highly visible site with a multitude of opportunities and development (subject to consents).”

They freehold offers outright ownership of the property and land on which it stands.

The auction is due to take place on Wednesday at 7pm in the Glasgow Radisson Hotel on Argyle Street. The Ailsa Craig lighthouse was built in 1886 and runs on solar power. A castle above it was erected in the late 1500s.

The volcanic plug is now uninhabited but at one time there would have been 29 people living on it throughout the summer.

But people still get the chance to land with sightseeing boat tours running from Girvan.

An adventurous couple have become the first to wed on the rock in December after getting special permission from its Marquis owner.

Donning sturdy hiking boots Angela and Jim Lindop braved the choppy Irish sea with only their boat crew, registrar and hotel manager as guests.
