Going quackers for charity

-

Rotary members are calling - or rather quacking - on businesses to get involved with their annual duck race which aims to raisemore than £12,000 for a good cause.

Alloway Rotarians are aiming to raise £12,500 for charity Excellent Development who will assign the funds to a specific community project in Kenya in need of a sand dam.

Parts of Kenya receive large amounts of rainfall in the space of a few days but are then faced with months of drought, leaving women and children to ditch school and work to walk miles every day to carry water from distant boreholes.

The construction of a sand dam would allow rainfall to be collected during the wet periods and would store enough to last the community throughout the dry season.

This in turn would enable children to go to school, women to work and crops to grow.

Rotary members are eager to raise the cash via their third annual duck race which will take place at the Holy Fair on the Low Green on Saturday, June 23.

The club’s public relations officer Peter Ball said: “To reach our target, we are relying heavily on the support of local businesses.

“We have had a great response so far.

“A £90 donation provides six people with clean water for life, while the donor earns publicity through their block in the wall and via the club’s web and Facebook sites with a link to their sites.

Tickets for the race are on sale from club members and local outlets including 27 Alloway, Rozelle Tearooms, A Joy of Health, Parks Honda Doonfoot Garage and Petcayr. The winning duck earns a £25 prize.
