Prestwick leave it late at Titwood

Champs edge home in thriller

- Lochlin Highet

Champions Prestwick went joint top of the Western Premier Division and then set their sights on staying there.

But they did it with only three balls to spare as they beat Clydesdale by two wickets at Titwood.

After winning the toss, Prestwick inserted the hosts who looked in great shape after putting on 108 for the first wicket.

Sachin Chaudhary (2-44) and Ross Patterson (2-55) soon had wickets tumbling and Clydesdale ended their 50 overs at 240-9.

Prestwick had to fight hard for victory at 243-8. Top knocks came from Chaudhary (51), Fraser Macdonald (49), Fazal Jawad (45) and Tom Fleet (35 not out).

Prestwick now share top spot on 86.67 per cent with Ferguslie who suffered their first defeat when they lost by 35 runs to Greenock.

The Henry Thow Oval men will bid to keep up their hot run when they host Uddingston on Saturday.

In the midweek McCulloch Cup, Prestwick beat GHK by eight wickets with seven overs to spare.

GHK posted 144-4 off their 20 overs but an unbeaten 46 from Macdonald steered Prestwick to victory at 145-2.

On Wednesday night this week, Prestwick entertain Irvine.

The St Ninians XI lost by eight wickets at home to Titwood.

St Ninians were skittled for 131 in 33.3 overs. The visitors cruised home at 132-2 in only 19.5 overs.

•A crushing nine wicket defeat away to Poloc piled on the agony as Ayr’s miserable season continued.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Ayr slumped to 74-7 before an eight wicket partnership of 94 between Scott McElnea (77) and Pushkar Bhandari (42 not out) rescued some respectability.

But Poloc cruised to their target for the loss of only one wicket.

Ayr also fell to defeat in last Wednesday’s McCulloch Cup when travelling to Irvine.

They set the hosts a target of 121 with the main stand coming from Michael Miller (37) and McElnea (29).

In reply Irvine were always ahead of the run rate and despite a flurry of late wickets reached their target with ten balls to spare.

The Cambusdoon XI posted 236 at home to Shawholm on Saturday.

Ross Mitchell top scored with 94, but the visitors eased home with six overs to spare.

The Development XI were the only victors of the week as the youthful team won away to Weirs on Thursday.

This week sees Ayr at home to Clydesdale in league action on Saturday, while tonight (Wednesday) they complete their McCulloch Cup group games at home to GHK.

Cambusdoon hosts a Veterans Day on Saturday for players and supporters to recall yesteryear.
