But McCall urges fans to be patient over signing wishlist

- Stuart Wilson

Ian McCall reckons Ayr United are in the driving seat for a fast start to the Championship.

But he warned fans to stay patient this week, as he bids to complete his summer “wishlist”.

McCall, who is nearing deals for a goalkeeper and left back, will bid to beef up his squad as they kick off pre-season training on Saturday.

It follows a solid few weeks at Somerset Park, where United have clung on to a string of wanted men.

McCall said: “We made a conscious decision to try and keep the majority of the squad together after last year.

“It’s not always been that way, so hopefully it works to our advantage this time. We obviously need to add, and I’m working hard to do that.

“I have my wishlist, but fans need to be patient — it’s still very early and we’re a long way from the real action starting.”

Last week’s decision to release Jordan Hart has freed up extra squad space but McCall admits he could struggle to bag all targets.

Ayr have been linked with a loan move for Rangers’ keeper Robby McCrorie and McCall admits new faces will need to arrive.

He said: “In an ideal world, we need a goalie, left back, a centre half and another midfielder.

“The good thing is we have the basis of a squad in place and we’re ready to get cracking.”

Talks are also ongoing with Declan McDaid and David Ferguson, both of whom McCall would like to keep.

●McCall was speaking after getting behind the wheel of his new motor thanks to a deal between the club and Caledonia Vehicle Solutions.

Lifelong Honest Man, Jason Skimming, is boss at the Ayr-based firm. Jason, 32, said: “It’s funny for me because I’ve followed the club since I was a wee boy standing in the Somerset Road End.

“Four years ago we got involved in sponsoring the club and our advertising board now proudly sits above the goal.

“So when the chance came to sort out a good deal for Ian and the club with this car, I was happy to help.”

●Ayr’s annual shirt sponsorship draw will be held on Friday, July 13.

Entry to the draw is £150 per ticket or £250 for two. Tickets from 01292 263435 ext 3.

●Volunteers can join a terracing clean-up from 10am on Saturday.
