Council bosses deny vying to give Prestwick a worse deal than Troon

- Stuart Wilson

Council bosses have denied doing the dirty on prestwick as the row over new parking charges cranked up a gear.

officials insist the town is Not getting a raw deal at the hands of neighbouring troon, where officials have been accused of performing a u- turn.

It follows last week’s news that sNp councillor Craig Mackay told his own town’s residents that only one troon car park was being hit with new fees.

Initially, three had been earmarked in the council’s March budget plans.

prestwick councillor, Hugh Hunter, hit out: “should this prove to be the case, I have to wonder what agenda is at play here.

“the plans to introduce parking charges at Bellevue road will be hugely detrimental to businesses and residents in prestwick.

“people are trying hard in this town and are making a success of the local economy here.

“If there is apparent respite being offered up for troon, you have to ask why not the same for prestwick.”

We revealed how the council’s apparent u- turn in troon came amidst a 1700- signature petition signed by furious reisdents and businesses.

Cllr Mackay had told troon Community Council: “traffic orders are being progressed at royal troon, Bellevue road in prestwick and Blackburn road in ayr.

“It came as a surprise to me as the statement said no other parking charges are proposed at this time and that is quite a change from what we were looking at.”

But this week, council officials denied they were straying from their stated course as the bizarre row rumbles on.

a spokesman said: “We’re currently finalising plans for the introduction of charges at Blackburn road, Bellevue road and troon seafront car parks – all of which will require a new traffic regulation order ( tro).

“We’ll soon be getting the tro process underway, which will include a period of public consultation, and further details on this will be shared in due course.”
