‘ Slow shopping’ plan for dementia patients

Store giants Sainsbury’s trial new check- out

- Stuart Wilson

A Prestwick shop has been hailed for trialling a “relaxed” check- out lane.

Sainsbury’s have launched the new scheme as part of a drive to support those living with dementia.

Lane 24 in the store is open from 10am to 6pm and also features a hearing loop and staff trained in working with dementia. It’s hoped the lane will make the shopping experience “more pleasant and less stressful” for the elderly and those who want more time packing their bags.

The trial is running for a month and was launched as part of Dementia Awareness Week.

Volunteers at Dementia Friendly Prestwick have helped launch the pioneering scheme. The group’s treasurer, Councillor Hugh Hunter, said: “Sainsbury’s are to be applauded for their attitude towards this.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that they have accepted our proposal to make this a reality. The catalyst came when we approached them to stage a pilot project.

“Lynne Nimmo, their store manager, and the staff have been fantastic and supportive.

“Having that bit of peace and quiet when you reach the checkout can make the world of difference.

“We think this is a wonderful innovation and hopefully it is the start of a lot more to come.”

A branch of Sainsbury’s in Newcastle trialed a similar concept which has now become permanent.
