Supporting Our People Our Place

Families join together for fun town fun day

- Abi Smillie

The sun was out in Girvan as 1500 people from the town and South Carrick celebrated the conclusion of the council’s Our People, Our Place initiative at a fantastic family fun day.

The week- long campaign, which saw the council pair up with a range of partners, culminated in a funfilled event at Girvan Academy and Victory Park organised in partnership with Girvan Town Team.

Families took part in a range of activities which included climbing walls, roller disco and Girvan’s very own ‘ It’s A Knockout’ competition.

The Quay Zone then opened its doors for a free pool party so everyone could cool down.

Cooking demos sporting taster sessions were on offer to encourage people to get active and eat healthier, as well as dedicated information on living with a disability and managing dementia.

Plenty of advice and support was available through partners including NHS Ayrshire & Arran, South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue. Adults were able to access advice on money and debt management, health and wellbeing and employability and skills, while support for children covered issues like mental health, staying safe and employability.

Council leader Douglas Campbell said: “I’m really happy with the way the people of Girvan and South Carrick have embraced Our People, Our Place.

“It shows that providing access to a range of services, focusing mainly on the schools as hubs, has been really worthwhile.

“The result is that a lot more people now realise the depth of support that’s available to them – and how to get that support.”

Irene Climie, chairwoman and trustee of Girvan Town Team, added: “Not only was it a great day out for everyone who came along, but it also gave us the opportunity to speak to local people and get their views and input into how we make Girvan and South Carrick safer, friendlier and healthier for everyone.

“We’ll be using all the feedback from the event to help develop a community action plan that will shape the bright and positive future we all want for our town.”
