Jim soars right up the leaderboar­d

Ayr’s player’s lead for top title and Doc Thom Salver

Jim Johnston ( Ayr Belleisle) has taken an early lead in the chase for the Ayrshire Order of Merit title and Doc Thom Salver.

After winning the Ayrshire Strokeplay Championsh­ip, Johnston also gained points in the Ayrshire Matchplay and West of Scotland Strokeplay and Seafield Open.

He also took maximum points in the West Kilbride Open and The Belleisle Cup.

Sandy Buchanan ( St Nicholas) marked his return from America with wins in the Stevenson Trophy at Girvan and the Seafield Open.

He also gained points in the West Kilbride Open and The Hillhouse Cup at Royal Troon to go second in the table, just ahead of the holder Michael Smyth ( Royal Troon).

Smyth’s win in the Ayrshire Matchplay Championsh­ip and Hillhouse Cup at Royal Troon along with points in The Belleisle Cup keeps alive his hopes of retaining the title.

Quarter- final draws for three Ayrshire Junior Golf League events were made at a recent Ayrshire Junior Golf League meeting.

Under 16 Knockout Trophy: Caprington v Loudoun; Kilmarnock ( Barassie) v Prestwick St Cuthbert; Irvine v Troon Welbeck; West Kilbride v Ayr Belleisle.

Junior Champion of Champions Trophy: Euan Ferguson ( Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Champion) v Callum Murray ( West Kilbride); Jack Broun ( Ayrshire Boys Champion) v Adam Carballo ( Prestwick St Cuthbert); Robbie Muir ( Kilmarnock Barassie) v Sean Addie ( Ayr Belleisle); Cameron Johnstone ( Troon Welbeck) v Kieran Beauchamp ( Turnberry).

Wallace Thornton Trophy: Loudoun v Ayr Belleisle; Ballochmyl­e v Turnberry; Caprington v Kilmarnock Barassie; Troon Welbeck v West Kilbride. All ties to be completed by August 5.
