Do parents need to take their children abroad?

Families point to a lack of entertainment

- Lochlin Highet

While the sun has been smothering us more than we could have ever hoped for, more and more families still seem to be jetting off to lands afar.

The weather isn’t a problem this year, so perhaps families feel there isn’t enough for their children to do over the holidays.

Earlier this year, we revealed that South Ayrshire Council’s play park at Ayr Beach was to close due to safety reasons – leaving parents with even less entertainment options now.

So we hit the streets to find out what the people of Ayr thought.

John Boyle, 66, of Ayr said: “The town is done. What is there to do for kids now?

“I have grandchildren but they just sit and play computer games now.”

Tom MacLeod, 55, of Ayr said: “I wouldn’t say there is enough for kids to do. I have one grandchild and he doesn’t get up to much here, so the family tend to take him away on holiday.”

Joanne Eastom, 51, of Ayr said: “The answer is probably no, kids don’t have enough to do these days.

“Now everything has to be paid for, it’s a struggle for parents.”

Vanessa Good, 31, of Ayr disagrees with the majority.

She said: “I think there is enough to do if you know where you’re looking.

“There are soccer clubs, holiday clubs and more, most of these aren’t council run though.

“It’s important to go looking for these.”

Now eveything has to be paid for, it’s a struggle for parents…
