Talk of the town from our social media

-

Our Memory Lane featured an old picture of Holmston Primary in 1884.

Elaine Campbell said: “Great wee school!

“Many fond memories even with the outside toilets!

“Mr Garven was headmaster and Mrs McCutcheon primary one.”

Amanda Nicol replied to Elaine’s comment saying: “My children laughed when I told them about the outside toilets – it was freezing in the winter!”

Garry Clark said: “Although the school dates from 1883, it began life in Smith Street as Smith’s Institution.

“The Ashgrove Street/ Holmston Road building was built nearer 1900, I think.”

Carol Murdoch said: “The good old days.

“Mrs Davidson was also one of the dinner ladies in the 50s when dear Mr Hunter was the headmaster. Great memories!”

We told that a drivethrough coffee shop and petrol pumps could be built on the A77.

Phil Smeeton said: “Council not happy with the amount of closed shops in the high street. “What can they do?

“Make it easier to not actually go into the town at all.

“Bravo.”

Liz McGinley said: “Would be nice to see something like this south of Ayr too.”

Concerns have been raised over a snack van which residents feel is promoting unhealthy eating near Cumnock Academy.

Steven Mackie said: “In Belmont there’s a ‘ burger van’, there was a chip van and a Indian van.

“Now it’s just the burger van there.

“There’s the chippy around the corner and the Tesco.

Can’t really stop one business when they’ll just go elsewhere to get the exact same thing.”

Te n n i s s u p e r s t a r Dominic Iannotti, who has a learning disability, climbed Goat Fell for charity.

Laura White said: “Well done Dominic, that’s fantastic.”

Karen McFarlane- Little said: “Such a proud mum you must be ( Helen).

“Well done Dominic.” Laura Falls said: “Fantastic... lovely boy.”

Joanne Sloan said: “Helen you must be so proud.” We told that thousands had been pocketed from council after a secret VAT grab.

Jamie Brown said: “So that explains the 15 per cent discount with a leisure card. Effectively they’re still gaining a bigger increase despite offering this discount to residents.”
