An Ayr primary school have been annoucned as the winner of the First Minister’s Reading Challenge 2018.
Pupils from P6B at St John’s Primary were given the award for P6 Pupil Reading Journey by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at the ceremony celebrating the second year of the challenge.
A total of 17 prizes were awarded at the celebration event for the First Minister’s Reading Challenge which took place at the Hub in Edinburgh last Wednesday.
The challenge created an opportunity for every participating child’s personal achievements to be recognised by their teachers and librarians with personal certificates and other resources.
P6B at St John’s Primary received their award in recognition of the exciting and imaginative initiatives they devised as part of their reading journey. The pupils took part in a shared reading project, undertook weekly reading challenges, created inspiring reading displays and even campaigned at their local library to encourage more people in their community to use the facilities.
Commenting on the award, Clare Casey, Class Teacher said: “We are extremely proud of our P6B pupils and their fantastic achievement. Reading for pleasure has always been a priority for our school and the First Minister’s Reading Challenge has enabled us to take this to the next level and introduce a range of activities which motivated the pupils and sustained their interest throughout the year.”
The First Minister praised all pupils who took part and added: “Raising attainment is at the heart of the Scottish Government’s work. That is why I launched the First Minister’s Reading Challenge – to encourage reading for pleasure from an early age which in turn, helps improve children’s literacy.”
