Struggling travellers raise rail access issue

Girvan CC told of struggle getting to station platform

- Abi Smillie

Frustrated train users are raising concerns over access to platforms.

Entry to platform four at Ayr train station, accessible from a steep stepped bridge or from the back of car park two, has been flagged as a “struggle” and “difficult.”

Many elderly commuters have voiced their concerns, claiming the bridge is a challenge and the back entrance is a long walk for those with mobility problems.

And others are in dispute if the responsibilty to help is up to Scotrail or not.

The issue was raised at Girvan’s Community Council meeting this month.

One member said: “The struggle I had getting up and over the bridge was terrible.

“When I asked for help I was told it wasn’t their issue.

“I think they’re getting away with just ignoring it.

“I met someone who had to get a taxi from the front taxi rank round to the other side.”

Another member added: “I do think I’m fairly healthy but I’m diabetic and my feet are bad, so trying to hold on to the rail is difficult.”

The same issue was also flagged at Girvan train station, with one community councillor querying the help offered with heavy luggage.

They said: “The ticket conductor actually commandeered someone else to go and help my friend to take her bags around the other side.”

Councillor Peter Henderson had previously questioned the help available with ScotrRail.

He said: “What they said to me when I raised it was approach a member of staff and they will help.”
