Festival features restored pavilion

Hub re- opening for Glebe Park celebration of sport

- Lochlin Highet

Maybole groups have teamed up in an effort to restore a sports hub in the town.

Carrick Round Table and North Carrick Community Sports Hub are doing up the Sommerville Pavilion in memory of a former round tabler David Sommerville.

In 1991 Carrick Round Table suffered its darkest moment when one of its brightest lights and most committed tablers, David Sommerville died in a road accident following a weekend of community work with the Round Table.

David had been Carrick Round Table chairman 1989- 1990, the year preceding his death.

He was loved by his wife Linda and their three children Paul, Ross and Lorna.

Family, friends and fellow tablers were determined to build a fitting memorial to the young man who had been committed to doing his best for his local community, and who died far too soon.

What followed was Carrick Round Table’s largest fundraising campaign which resulted in the building of the Sommerville Pavilion in the Glebe Park, Maybole.

Over many years the pavilion was used to provide a sporting base in the park for the people of Maybole and visiting teams.

In recent times the pavilion had fallen into a state of disrepair with Carrick Round Table starting a campaign on Maybole Gala Day 2016 to start raising funds for its restoration.

And this week the pavilion will be formally re- opened for the inaugural Maybole Sommerville Sports Festival.

It will kick off at 2pm on Saturday, June 30 with the official opening ceremony taking place at 2.30pm.

The festival itself will be a community sporting event organised by the Round Table and supported by the groups that make up the sports hub.

In the Glebe there will be an amazing programme of sports demonstrations, games and family fun.

The programme will include rugby, American Football, Muay Thai demonstrations, five a side community football competition, footgolf, tug- of- war, beat the goalie, inflatable fun, children’s favourite Uncle Billy and sports competitions all being put on for free for the community by Carrick Round Table.

Then to round off the end of the day Carrick Round Table are extending an invitation to attend the Maybole Sommerville Sports Festival Party Night at Maybole Town Hall ( 7.30pm) where a sports- themed party night with sports fancy dress ( optional) will take place, with local band Audioclass hitting the stage.
