A fab home fit for a Beatle

- Stephen Houston

Back in the old days, it was a watering hole in the middle of a valley.

Parched country folk and farm workers were drawn to its thirstquenching delights and lively weekend atmosphere of fun.

It was the only licensed hostelry for miles around and some would even pass through mushroom littered fields and cross the River Duisk on foot to reach it.

Now the Glen Tachur is on the market for £ 850,000.

Many a year has passed since it was a hotel, and many before that since it started life as a hunting lodge for the aristos.

It is now a lavish country house of eight bedrooms and six acres, fronted by fragrant gardens.

The Glen Tachur sits in the middle of the lush Duisk Valley between Pinwherry and Barrhill.

Bell Ingram in Ayr has just put it on the market with a fixed price.

In Georgian times it was built as a hunting lodge and retains some fine wooden panelling, flooring and beams in the main public rooms.

Unusually, it also boasts a recording studio and art gallery.

So with six of the eight bedrooms en- suite, there is the potential for a country retreat business to entice the next Beatles or Pablo Picasso. The main house has four big public rooms, but potential abounds outside to create a real out- of- theway haven.

The drawing room is 28 feet long, the dining room more than 31 feet.

The bay windowed library which adjoins the drawing room is about 15- foot square.

There is a three- bedroom detached coach house and a further two bedroom staff flat.

In addition there is another building that could be converted into a cottage and a 100- foot long stable and outhouse.

Bell Ingram say: “It is suitable for both private and business use and could lend itself to a variety of uses including a hotel, holiday home, B& B, cattery, kennels, equestrian facility ( 7 stables), garage/ car sales, plant nursery, and many more potential business opportunities.”

There is a professional post production recording studio and the equipment is for sale by separate negotiation.

The property has three phase electrics and wiring/ plumbing for a commercial kitchen. There is a gold pump commercial heating system.

The house is shielded by formal gardens include rhododendrons, yew, birch and Douglas fir.
