OUR MAN DAN’S SURE TO SHINE

Somerset boss McCall lauds signing

- Stuart Wilson

Scotland starlet Daniel Harvie has been tipped to take Somerset Park by storm after becoming Ayr United’s first new face of the summer.

Boss Ian McCall ended his long chase for the former Aberdeen leftback by getting his man on Tuesday.

And the gaffer insists Ayr have landed a player of “huge potential”.

McCall said: “We’ve had to be very patient in order to get Daniel.

“There were three or four other leftbacks who we could have gone for, but I was determined to get the right fit.

“I hate using the word, but we’re trying to develop a certain culture here and Daniel will fit straight into that.

“He is ideal for our style of play and we’ve certainly done alright with our boys from Aberdeen when you consider the likes of Lawrence Shankland and Michael Rose.”

Harvie, who was part of the Scots under- 21 squad in Toulon this summer, has turned down a new deal at Pittodrie to sign a one year contract with Ayr.

McCall revealed: “You have to admire the ambition of the boy to take a chance.

“He has huge potential and wants to be playing games – and he will get that here. He is young and hungry and just the type of boy we want.”

Harvie, 19, landed Dumbarton’s young player of the year award when on loan at the Sons for the 2016/ 17 season.

It comes as Ayr inch closer to a new keeper, with a deal expected within days, while McCall still hopes to retain defender David Ferguson.

United will be back in action at Forfar this Saturday ( kick- off 3pm) in the first of their pre- season friendlies.

Ayr then head to Stranraer on Tuesday for another friendly, kick- off 7.30pm.
