Residents blast car drivers over parking

Fears that problem is an accident waiting to happen

- Gary Fanning

Fed- up residents have called for action to tackle illegal parking streets in Cumnock.

Neighbours are up in arms over selfish drivers who park near junctions and on the pavement in the Barhill area of the town.

And they say the parking is dangerous in Bute Road near to Hospital Road and it was an accident waiting to happen.

The issue has been raised several times at Cumnock Community Council.

One resident said: “What is the procedure for parking in streets outwith the town centre?

“In Barrhill, the cars are parked on the pavement and near junctions.

“It is bad on Bute Road on to Hospital Road.

“It is an accident waiting to happen. “On Homehead Road, there is a works van parked at the junciton and it is an accident waiting to happen.

A police spokesman at the meeting said if the park on the corner of the road and are causing an obstruction then they can deal with it.

He said he would pass the issue on to community police officers so that they can deal with the issue.

The officer added: “If it is the same person then report it to the police and we can speak to them about it.”

Another community council said there is insufficient parking spaces in the town for the amount of modern day families with cars.

He said: “It is nearly an accident going up Hospital Road and someone fleeing out the junction.”

Another said there was a heavy amount of traffic travelling along Hospital Road into Bute Road.

“It’s a windy road and cars park on both sides of the road and at the junction.

“They go over the pavement and you can’t see up the road and there have been a couple of accidents .

“One of them was at the corner of Hospital Road and Bute Road.

Another said: “The last time police parking on the road they said is was an obstruction.

“There is a lot of folk parking on the pavement and they are not supposed to park on the pavement.”

Stewart Turner, head of Ayrshire Roads Alliance, said: “We have not been advised of any parking issues in this area. However, as Bute Road is in the Holmhead residential area, our parking attendants do not have any powers to enforce obstructive parking on pavements and across driveways in the absence of any yellow line waiting restrictions.

“This would be a matter for Police Scotland to investigate.

“We would be pleased to look at any specific issues in consultation with Police Scotland and would encourage the community council to contact us with specific concerns at enquiries@ ayrshireroadsalliance.org”
