Don’t let my son’s killer drive again

Angry mum slams five- year disqualification

- Lochlin Highet

The heartbroken mum of a young man killed by his teenage girlfriend in a horror smash told the Post the girl should never be allowed to drive again. Natasha Scott, of Oakwood Avenue, Ayr, was jailed for three years and banned from driving for five years for causing Kai Millgan’s death. Kai’s mum Bonnie slammed the sentence as “too lenient” and said it was “disgusting” that Scott could be driving again in five years. Bonnie, 42, told the Post that Scott has ruined her family’s life. “Three years isn’t enough really,” she said, “but the judge was great and I believe she gave out the maximum sentence that she could under Scots law. “I feel numb. “Getting jailed for three years is nothing compared to losing a family member and ruining lives.” Scott started seeing a new boyfriend within a couple of months of the horror and has a seven- month old baby boy. She enjoyed boozy nights out with her new flame and posted them on social media which the Milligan family said hurt them . Scott and Kai had only been going out together for about five weeks at the time of the accident. The couple were near neighbours in Miller Street in Maybole and his father Brian still lives in the town. Bonnie added: “I read articles about her baby’s human rights if she was jailed. “The baby and her family have done nothing but at the same time I am never going to have my son back.” Scott, 21, had only passed her test 11 months before the accident. She lost control of her Vauxhall Corsa after clocking high speeds on the B7024 from Maybole to Ayr in July 2016. She failed to slow as she negotiated a hill crest and a left hand bend and her car ploughed into a fence, brick wall and telegraph pole before coming to a halt. Twenty- one- year- old Kai, who was a rear seat passenger, died and three other teenagers in the car were hurt. A 15- year- old boy needed major surgery to reconstruct his face. Scott pled guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and injuring the other passengers. Her sentence came almost two years after the crash in July 2016, with Bonnie and her family growing more frustrated day by day. Bonnie said: “It has dragged on for so long now, it has been terrible. “It has been almost two years. That has been hard for us. “Her only being banned for five years is disgusting. “She probably shouldn’t be driving again. “If it’s five years then three of those will be when she’s in jail, with another two when she’s out. And she added: “She has completely ruined our lives and also injured another boy yet she could be driving again. “It’s ridiculous.” Prosecutor Duncan McPhie said Scott had increased her speed and at the hill crest he car became airborne before she lost control. The court heard the Corsa started to fishtail. Scott tried to regain control but her car spun and then smashed into the fence, wall and pole. Mr McPhie said: “Mr Milligan, seated behind the driver, sustained fatal injuries as a fence post passed through a side rear window, striking him in the face.” The 15- year- old boy was hit in a similar way. Scott, a 17- year- old girl and a 12- year- old boy managed to clamber free. Crash investigators were not able to calculate exactly how fast Scott was travelling before the smash. But it was concluded she was going at excessive speed at the time. The court heard Scott made no comment when quizzed by police but became upset. Scott sobbed in court as she was led away to begin her sentence. The court heard that her sevenmonth old son will be cared for by her parents.

She has completely ruined our lives and yet she could be driving again. It’s ridiculous. Bonnie Milligan
