What a load of rubbish

- Stuart Wilson

Packed Ayr beach is being turned into a summer rubbish dump, residents have claimed. Council bosses are being accused of failing to react after shocking pictures emerged of a litter- strewn prom. Disgusted charity worker, May Gilchrist, took the picture above last Wednesday at 6pm. May, who works for homeless agency SeaScape, said: “Of course it has to come from the grassroots and people shouldn’t be dropping litter in the first place. “But this isn’t rocket science. The town and beach is packed. “There needs to be more of an effort from all concerned.” We told last week how residents are already up in arms at part of Ayr beach being left untended by the council. And the latest images are doing little to help public relations. MP Bill Grant said: “It’s clear that visitors are making valiant attempts to bring their rubbish to the bins. “But when the council simply fails to service the bins it renders their efforts pointless. “Surely it is not beyond the wit of human intellect to focus efforts on areas of high demand such as beach fronts during spells of weather like this. I have in the past asked for receptacles or skips to be strategically placed on the beach at peak times. “This would take the pressure off bins on the promenade but this may be subject to the ‘ we’ve never done that before’ policy. “Ayr is a go- to destination in weather like this, so come on South Ayrshire Council – let’s make it a visually pleasurable experience for our visitors and not for the gulls.” A council spokesman said: “We are encouraging people to make use of the available bins or take their litter with them when they leave. “It’s always disappointing when people don’t do that and leave their mess behind for others to clean up. “Our staff work hard to keep our beaches clean and tidy, but that’s always a challenge when we have thousands of people flocking to our shores. “We have additional bins in place and we deploy additional resources where possible to ensure bins are emptied regularly. “We would ask those visiting our beaches to do their bit to ensure that our beaches look as good when people leave as they did when they arrived.”
