The school of rock

- Abi Smillie

Youngsters waved goodbye to school for the summer as they celebrated by rocking out. Girvan Academy music department organised a special rock concert for pupils last month, saying hello to Glasgow musicians 100 Fables and welcoming back former pupil and local musician Matt Wilson. Four- piece band 100 Fables mixed their love of the new wave movement and their passion for post- punk electro sound to generate their authentic sound, using much loved influences of Blondie, The Cars and The Killers. The school’s music department focused on positive destinations as part of the school session, and built up a positive partnership with The Academy of Music and Sound, Glasgow who delivered a Careers in Music presentation to some of the senior pupils. Music teacher Callum Johnson was thrilled to organise the event for pupils, giving them a treat to end their last week at school for the summer. Callum said: “This was a great opportunity for our young people to experience live music. “All musicians have worked extremely hard to get to where they are and the pupils seemed to really enjoy the afternoon. “It is great for them to see a possible career pathway in music live in action.”
