Sensory room to help kids

- Charlene Bennie

Children throughout Ayrshire who have additional support needs will have access to a brand new sensory room thanks to funding provided by UK Steel Enterprise. Complete with soft furnishings and plentiful room for wheelchair access, it will provide a safe place for children and young people who struggle with social interaction, learning or life at home. Open 10 hours a day, seven days a week, the quiet room is designed to help children wind down if they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed an d provide respite for parents and families. The project was funded by the Tata Steel subsidiary who provided Ayrshire Children Services with £ 2200. The sensory room opened at Ko- Nekt Centre in Ardrossan on June 26. Marianne Greenway, a representative from Ayrshire Children’s Services, said: “With our new sensory room, we can now welcome and assist more children and their families. There is no place like this in our area and without UKSE’s support, we wouldn’t have been able to create the sensory room.” Scott Webb, regional executive at UK Steel Enterprise, said: “The new sensory hut is a fantastic space for both children and parents alike and we are looking forward to seeing the positive impact the centre will undoubtedly have on the area.”
