And patients at privately run Ayr Clinic feel the same

-

In the recent report by The Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland, another patient spoke of damage to their mental health caused by the noisy and unsettled atmosphere when patients were being restrained.

Findings also detailed a lack of de- escalation space - one room was also used as a visitor and meeting room - and raised concerns about staff’s ability to restrain patients safely.

It said: “This was discussed with the manager of the Ayr Clinic during the visit and raised with the medical director at the end of the day meeting.

“They agreed to look into these concerns with immediate effect.”

T h e c o m m i s s i o n recommended managers should review staffing levels, patient safety concerns, de- escalation space, use of medication and restraint techniques within Arran Ward. This was to take place and have an action plan established within one month.

The report added: “We found that staff knew their patients well and patients we met with were generally complimentary of the staff support.”

An Ayr Clinic spokesman said: “We have taken on board feedback from the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland and are making immediate improvements to the clinic. “Alongside our ongoing focus on staffing, we are currently refurbishing all our wards as part of a £ 500,000 project.

“We are also working with the Scottish Patient Safety Programme and offering an extensive patient activities.”
