The robes and chains of office of the former burghs of Troon, Prestwick, Maybole and Girvan may be returned to places of honour in the towns.

The regalia has been stored in Ayr since Kyle and Carrick District Council came into being in 1975.

But with another local government re- organisation on the horizon, Provost Gibson Macdonald believes the items should be returned to suitable locations in the former burghs.

Maybole’s burgh status dates from 1516, Girvan’s 1668, Troon’s 1896, and Prestwick’s from 1903.

A new office block opened by insurance company General Accident is hailed in a two- page special feature in the Ayrshire Post.

Lord Polwarth, Governor of the Bank of Scotland, officially opens the Beresford Terrace building, with Provost Handyside of Ayr a VIP guest.

Main contractor is Mauchline firm Thomas Findlay and Sons, and the structure of the building is of pre- cast re- inforced concrete columns and beams.

General Accident says its former premises, on the same site, had become inadequate.

‘ There is an excellent vaudeville programme at The Pavilion this week, where there have been large houses.

John Barton and Annie Ashley top the bill in the comedy entitled “Money Talks”, which is cleverly produced.

Nibin and Dorris are also very successful in a comedy turn, while Dolly Ross, chorus comedienne, renders in effective style, several popular numbers.

Bert Coleman, whistling comedian, demonstrates his versatility in this line of entertainment.’
