Diamond memories for Troon couple

- Stephen Houston

The joy on their faces was clear to see as they celebrated 60 years as a married couple.

And it was the same back on August 1, 1958 as the dazzling young couple tied the knot at Portland Parish Church in Troon.

John and Celia- Anne Leburn celebrated their big day with family and friends at Dundonald House.

And the old pictures helped revive memories for Celia- Anne, who has dementia.

John, 83, is now of South Beach, Troon but was living in York Road as a single man.

His bride Celia- Anne Gow lived at The Lodge in Mainholm, Ayr.

John was a great rugby player, playing for Ayrshire county where he scored 22 tries in 18 games, for Ayr Rugby Club and for Marr College.

John remains a playing honorary member at Royal Troon where he’s honed his skills for 60 years.

Celia- Anne , now 81, played golf at The Ladies Club in Troon for 40 years.

She was born in China where her father was working.

But they had to get out rather sharpish, catching the last boat out as the Japanese started shelling.

They moved to Montreal in Canada before ending up in Ayr.

Celia- Anne’s grandfather had been involved in business at the Fruitmarket in Glasgow before branching out at the Robertson Nursery at Mainholm.

John met up with Celia- Anne because her grandfather lived across from St Meddans Church in Troon.

They went on their first date to the Embassy picture house in Troon on St Valentine’s Day.

The Leburns have three children, John who worked in finance for Pernod Ricard, daughter Lindy - who is a teacher in Kilmarnock - and Blair who is a senior director of revenue for the PGA Tour in the US.

They have six grandchildren.
