Eddie’s treble is Glass above

- Edwin Lawrence

A retired town hall caretaker did Maybole proud with a hattrick of wins on Channel 4’ s ‘ Countdown’ quiz show.

Eddie Glass, 67, has been receiving praise on social media and in person for his tremendous performances.

“I’ve been inundated with people telling me how well I did,” said Eddie.

“I really enjoyed the experience. It was something I’ve always wanted to do.

“I could maybe have gone on a bit further but the numbers let me down. That’s normally my strong point when I’m sitting at home playing along.”

Eddie was not even in the country when his ‘ Countdown’ shows were broadcast last week.

“I was in Bulgaria on holiday with my wife Mary Ann and friends,” he said. “My shows were actually recorded back in April, but I was asked to keep quiet about it.”

Eddie made his first appearance on Monday, August 6, when he was on fire with both words and numbers.

It was a tighter affair on the Tuesday but Eddie got through on the final conundrum puzzle.

Eddie made it a hat- trick on the Wednesday but his winning run came to an end the next day when he lost out to a policeman from Norkolk.

He said: “It was all good fun, with Channel 4 paying expenses for myself and Mary Ann to go down to the Salford Quays studios, near Manchester.

“Countdown has a great team, both behind and in front of the cameras.

“Host Nick Hewer is a friendly man, and the two girls on the show, Rachel Riley and Susie Dent, are lovely people.”

Eddie told the TV audience how he went to the World Cup in Spain in 1982 with ‘ The Maybole Boys’ on a doubledecker bus called Auld Reekie.

An STV reporter who covered the story was a young Gordon Brown, who went on to be Prime Minister.

Eddie was a school jannie at both St Cuthbert’s and Cairn primaries before ending his working career at Maybole Town Hall.

He was presented with the Matt Dunnachie Award in 2015 for his contribution to the community.

Eddie’s next door neighbour in Dunlop Terrace, Alex Menzies, was a Countdown contestant 12 years ago when the show was hosted by Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman.
