A passion for plants

Family business still growing strong

- Abi Smillie

It’s where plants come first and customers come back again.

And that’s still the motto of John Train and Sons, one of Ayrshire’s only remaining retail nurseries, some 60 years later.

Celebrating their diamond anniversary of the Tarbolton based business, the rose specialists popped on a beautiful summer flower fayre to share with their customers.

Each staff member arranged a special display, showcasing their innovative use of hanging baskets and arrangements of pretty potted plants.

Established in 1958 by John Train and his two sons Matthew and Adam, the family run business grew over the years into the thriving plant nursery it is today.

Adam and his daughter Alison are now at the helm of the horticulture business, following Matthew’s retirement in 2007.

Speaking of their flower fayre, Alison, 54, said: “We had a good weekend – everyone who came along seemed to love it.

“And lots of people went home and contacted friends to recommend they come and see it – so we received good feedback.”

Adam, 82, who admits his favourite flower is still the rose, was delighted with the turnout and chuffed to commemorate 60 years of the business.

The beautiful displays will remain on show before the team get started on seasonal arrangements such as gift baskets and holly wreaths for their Christmas Fayre.

Post photographer Euan McCall popped along to join in the flower power celebrations.
