- Lochlin Highet

Two talented swimmers from South Ayrshire Swim Team’s Para Squad have returned from a fabulous adventure to Canada.

Cerys McCrindle and Laura Logan travelled to Nova Scotia to represent Great Britain in the ninth Down’s Syndrome World Championships.

They competed alongside 200 other swimmers from 25 nations and played a key role in helping Britain secure second place overall.

Coach Gary Craig said: “Along with memories that will live with them and their families forever, both girls returned home with medals and numerous lifetime best times.

“These fantastic achievements from swimmers who face additional challenges in life really show that with patience, commitment and determination, great things can be achieved.

“South Ayrshire Swim Team’s Para Squad has provided the girls with an opportunity to show everyone that this really is the case.

“Being part of the squad has helped to enhance wellbeing and independence while encouraging friendship and a sense of belonging that can sometimes be hard to find.

“Both of the girls are big characters in the club!”

Cerys and Laura were the only Scottish swimmers to make the required qualifying criteria and to be included in the Great Britain Team and they were fabulous ambassadors for South Ayrshire.

Gary added: “Everyone at South Ayrshire Swim Team are so proud of them and their achievements.

“The next training camp for the GB Squad will be held in Scotland at the Citadel, Ayr in November and it will be a great opportunity for anyone who is interested to come along and see how it is done.”
