COME ROARING BACK TO SOMERSET
McCall tells ‘ lost ‘ fans to rekindle Ayr love
Ian McCall is begging fans to turn out and back his golden group of Ayr stars.
United, who continued their glory start to the season by thrashing Dundee 3- 0 on Saturday, are riding the crest of a wave.
Now McCall wants a lost generation of supporters to respond at the turnstiles.
The boss said: “We have a young vibrant team that, most importantly, is winning games and scoring goals.
“We are playing the type of football that attracts punters and this is a great time to be an Ayr fan.
“When I came here four years ago in January things were a bit of a mess.
“And maybe it has taken longer to attract people back because of that – folk had lost that love for the club.
“But right now there can be no argument that this bunch of boys deserve all the backing in the world.”
McCall added: “This Saturday will tell us a lot in that regard and I would love to see 2500 of our own fans in the ground against Dunfermline.
“Somerset is the most magical place when it’s rocking and the atmosphere is second to none.
“We’re heading in the right direction and the numbers are coming back so it’s all about keeping that momentum up now.”
Ayr, who haven’t conceded in seven games, welcome Dunfermline in the Championship game of the day following their League Cup heroics at Dens.
Reward for that is a quarter- final payday at Rangers, but McCall insists nobody at Somerset is losing focus despite the red hot start.
He said: “We’re not getting carried away here. There is a lot of work still to be done and all we’ve achieved is a good start, which counts for nothing.
“The mentality we wanted to build in the dressing room was a model of young, hungry players who didn’t blame anyone else but themselves.
“You’re seeing that in the performances every week.
“And the balance with the older heads like Mark Kerr and Jamie Adams is very good.”
Ayr go into this weekend with a full strength squad.
• United are set to be handed just 850 tickets for their Betfred Cup trip to Ibrox on Wednesday, September 26.
Somerset chiefs have asked for more but the request is likely to be turned down.
Meanwhile, Ayr’s re- arranged open day takes place on Sunday from noon until 3pm.
Entry is free with the first team squad attending. Attractions include a Stage Door BBQ, bouncy castle, facepainting, kids’ coaching, and lots more.
Free giant Ayrshire Post fixture posters will also be available – perfect for collecting player autographs.
