McCall says Ayr ready to heal 5- 0 pain

- Stuart Wilson

Ayr’s smarting squad are ready to put their five- goal pain to bed, says Ian McCall.

The United boss admits their horror 5- 0 hammering at Queen of the South may have raised a few eyebrows outwith Somerset Park.

But he insists faith in his own players has never wavered.

McCall said: “We’ve used the international break well and the boys have been in working very hard.

“I’ve gone back and watched the Queens video and while we clearly had an off- day, a couple of big early decisions went against us that shaped the game.

“It’s one of those where we just have to move on and set it right as quickly as possible.

“Saturday provides us with a great chance to do that.”

All eyes will be on McCall as Falkirk visit Somerset just a fortnight after trying to lure the Ayr boss away.

New Bairns manager, Ray McKinnon, will take charge of his first league game after making the controversial switch from Morton.

McCall said: “Listen, none of that matters now and all I’m focusing on is the task at hand here.

“I watched their game on Saturday and it told me we’ll have to be right at our best if we want to take the three points.”

The struggling Bairns, who booted Paul Hartley last month, sit bottom of the Championship and have yet to register a point.

A 1- 0 defeat at home to Welsh side Connah’s Quay got McKinnon’s reign off to a low- key start in the Irn- Bru Cup on Saturday.

Now Ayr, who miss only the suspended Dan Harvie, are hoping to pile on the misery.

McCall said: “It’s important we respond quickly to our bad result and the players know that.

“I touched on it last week but in such an open league, if you can get your momentum back quickly, then great.

“Whoever goes up might afford to lose eight or nine games, it has that kind of look.

“Our mood has been really upbeat and having the two- week gap has been helpful given the number of early games we’ve played.” Liam Smith will fill in at left- back in Harvie’s absence but McCall admits he cannot keep the ex- Hearts kid out of the team much longer.

He said: “Liam will come in and I don’t expect him out of the team after that. “Whether that means switching things elsewhere, we’ll see, but he’s set to play a big part going forward.” Ayr have sold out their allocation of 915 tickets for the Betfred Cup quarter final at Ibrox on Wednesday, September 26.
