McCall says in-form Ayr will take fight to Stevie G and Co

- Stuart Wilson

Ayr United will unleash their full attacking threat at Ibrox tonight, insists Ian McCall.

The boss admits there is “no point” in shutting up shop as Ayr take on Rangers in the Betfred Cup quarter final.

The Championship leaders will bid to cause a huge shock when lining up against Steven Gerrard’s revived outfit.

But McCall is adamant Ayr will not be making up the numbers.

He said: “We’re under no illusions about the task at hand but at the same time, we’re going there to try and win the game.

“We’ll play as we always do — with two strikers and to cause as many problems for them as we can.

“It’s one for the players and fans to look forward to and they must embrace the occasion.”

Ayr were walloped 6-1 by Rangers in February after a late collapse in the Scottish Cup at Somerset.

But United have lost just three times since then during a remarkable run.

And McCall said: “I hadn’t realised that statistic and it puts in perspective just how good we have been.

“We are playing some incredible football at times and the belief among the squad is there for all to see.

“Mind you, when you have a striker who looks like he’ll score every time he pulls on an Ayr shirt, it definitely helps.”

Lawrence Shankland’s latest goals at Alloa — taking his tally for the season to 15 — helped Ayr move to the league summit on Saturday.

And the boyhood Gers fan will look to make another statement tonight.

But McCall insists his main focus remains on what happens at Cappielow this weekend when Ayr face Morton.

He said: “It’s great that we have this game and it’s a super stage to play on.

“But far more important for me is what we do at Morton.

“People are getting excited because we’re top of the league but it’s six games.

“If we’re still here after 30 games then let’s start to think about it then.

“However, being top of the league allows a great feeling to exist around the club and people should enjoy this.

“It’s a fantastic time for the fans and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Jamie Adams could return for tonight’s Ibrox mission while Andy Geggan will come into the reckoning for a midfield role.
