South Ayrshire near top in country for recyling levels

-

Levels of recycled household waste in South Ayrshire is among the biggest in the country, a report has revealed.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency ( SEPA) released figures showing the lastest recycling rates of local authories across the country and South Ayrshire is among the few county’s showing the biggest hike in comparison to its neighbours.

In 2016, the county was at 49.9 percent and in 2017 it saw a 5.3 per cent rise with recycling rates up at 55.2 per cent, while North Ayrshire only had a 0.5 per cent increase and East Ayrshire had a 0.4 per cent decline.

Recently, South Ayrshire Council launched a campaign that saw 6500 households in Girvan and Carrick using a new recycling service, which aims to increase the quality of the waste collected for recycling and also increase the amount recycled.

A council spokesman, said: “We’re committed to meeting national targets to recycle 70 per cent of all waste by 2025 and the latest figures highlight that we’re already making positive progress.

“The rise reflects the fact that more people than ever are actively recycling, the roll out of food caddies to rural areas and improvements in the way we record our data.

“In the next seven month’s we’re introducing a new recycling service to increase the quality of the waste we collect, while also increasing the amount of materials we recycle, which will help deliver further improvements.”
