All in favour of high school campus cops

Public give thumbs up to initiative

It is just the way society is these days but it is good if it is going to protect people

Every secondary school in South Ayrshire now has a dedicated campus police officer - and people have backed the initiative.

The aim of the new ‘ campus cops’ is promote positive engagement between young people and the police to the benefit of the school and the wider community.

Erin Nixon, 17, had a police officer at her school and believes it was “really helpful”.

She said: “We left school two years ago and the campus cops were a great help. If a fight broke out they were really helpful and would get their within a minute.”

Shekira Horner, 17, added: “I would probably agree. They were great when we were at school.”

Julie Ward said: “I think it’s a good idea because my children went to school in East Ayrshire. I have got a son with ADHD so having them there worked for him so for that reason of children with behavioural problem, yes it’s a good idea.”

Donald Reid, fromDalmellington, believes that this new enforcement is an “indictment to the society we live in”.

He added: “I suppose it is a good idea if it is making the children safe but it is just an indictment to the society that we live in these days, unfortunately. It is just the way society is these days but it is good if this is going to protect people, especially the teachers as well.”
