Pupils coin it in for others
Rights Respecting Group Fundraising Events
On Friday, October 12, the Rights Respecting School Group at Auchinleck Academy organised a series of fundraising events, for the third year in a row, to raise money for their continued sponsorship of Jebbeh Kiazolu school in Liberia.
Pupils took part in a sponsored silence, dance or swim, which lasted a full afternoon.
S1 pupils popped on a French breakfast spread, organised by the Modern Languages department and supported by Tesco in Auchinleck, who kindly supplied orange juice, and chocolate spread for croissants.
Many pupils and staff also assisted Mary Gladwell, School/ Community Youth Worker, to bake cakes and various treats which were sold over interval and lunch break.
So far, a whopping £ 3,403 has been raised!
The school are extremely proud of all pupils for completing their challenges and taking action to promote young people’s rights and help the children of Jebbeh Kiazolu to access their entitlement to nutritious food, and to education.
It costs just over £ 13 to feed a child in Liberia for a full year- the money raised will allow all of the children at Jebbeh Kiazolu school to continue receiving a daily nutritious meal from the Mary’s Meals kitchen.
Prince’s Trust Enterprise Awards
Jay Connell and Rebecca Weir recently attended the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Awards where they collected the certificate on behalf of the school’s new Barista class “Bean and Gone”.
The Prince’s Trust provided funding for the equipment and training necessary to make our high quality hot drinks and help this new initiative get under way.
Broaden your Horizons with Languages
On Tuesday, October 9, 13 young linguists travelled with S3 pupils from Cumnock Academy to Prestwick Airport for the event which was organised by Scotland’s National Centre for Languages and Developing the Young Workforce, Ayrshire.
Students and staff from all of East Ayrshire schools were there to represent their Modern Languages Departments.
Guest speakers included Mark Pentleton of Radio Lingua ( High 5 French/ Spanish & the Coffee Break language tutorials), Jim Fleeting from the SFA and Captain Hugh Shiels from easyJet.
The speakers explained how languages have shaped their careers and opened doors for them in the world of sport, tourism and business.
And they also shared their views on how having a modern foreign language qualification can give you the edge over other candidates when applying for a jobs in a wide range of professions.
The students were then given the opportunity to speak in person to employers and representatives from a broad range of businesses from recruitment agencies to the hospitality industry.
Auchinleck pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found the speakers to be “inspirational”.
