Musical Marr marvels are all in fine voice

Pupils put on great show on the big stage

- Stephen Houston

When all eyes are on you, it’s not easy to fight the nerves and take to the stage ... then open your mouth and sing.

Marr College in Troon packed out its historic assembly hall for the first ever Young Singer of the Year competition.

Family and friends watched their songbird heroes get behind the mic and cheered them on to help calm their nerves.

It was Amy Thomson who triumphed with the judges with her spine- tingling rendition of Amazing Grace.

Her runner- up in the Senior section was Cameron Watson who belted out the Tina Turner classic “Proud Mary.”

The Queen hit “Somebody to Love” was the perfect recipe for Sophie Harvey.

The judges voted her the Junior Young Singer of the year.

The junior runner- up was Chelsea Jeffrey with “Stay” from Alessia Cara.

Marr music teacher Kirsty Walker organised the event with one eye on the end of year musical in June.

She had whittled performers down to 18 soloists and two ensembles and drafted in three professional judges from outside the school. She was delighted with the turnout and impressed with the hard work and dedication shown by the young singers and said: “It was great to see so many pupils in attendance to support their friends.” School dance troupes performed during the interval of the extravaganza.
