South Ayrshire finish ahead of county rivals

South Ayrshire Swim Team secured third place at the Clyde Coast Winter League Final behind winners City of Glasgow and runners- up Ren 96.

South Ayrshire’s 27- strong team took four wins, 14 runner- up spots and five third places from the 42 events towards their 332 points, placing them comfortabl­y ahead of North Ayrshire in fourth place on 309.

Sophie Cameron, 16, Daniel Frew, 10, and Keira Stericker, 14, secured top points with wins in their individual swims.

Sophie in the Open 100m back and Keira in the age 14 100m breaststro­ke smashed their best times while Daniel in the 50m back equalled his best along with finishing second in the 50 butterfly.

The final win for SAST came in the U14 4x50m Medley Team consisting of Keira Stericker ( backstroke), Emily North ( Breaststro­ke), Amber Stevenson ( butterfly) and Brooke Smillie ( freestyle).

Lennox Doherty, Astrid Friel, Lewis Hammond, Oscar Smillie and Hannah Young all contribute­d with runner- up places which carried over into the relays.

SAST took second place in six of the available 10 relay events which are counted as double points.

Head coach Byron Stericker said: “It was a very exciting and loud evening at the Citadel Sports Centre with some great racing.

“These kind of team competitio­ns are a great change from the norm and can bring out the best in many which was clear for us.

“Over 50 per cent of our swims were personal best times, which is fantastic during our demanding winter training cycle.

“We are making great progress and I can see a top two finish next year”.
