Police officer’s arm broken after street violence flares

A 30- man wedding brawl which erupted outside a busy hotel ended with a police officer in hospital.

Violence flared in the street near Ayr’s Mercure Hotel late on Saturday night.

Witnesses reported “bodies everywhere” as police battled to restore order on Dalblair Road.

Chaos broke in the street near Ayr’s Mercure Hotel late on Saturday night.

Witnesses reported “bodies everywhere” as cops battled to restore order on Dalblair Road.

Two arrests were made following the fight which spilled out from the town centre hotel.

One eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said: “It kicked off all of a sudden and guys were fighting everywhere in the street.

“There must have been almost 30 of them involved and it was absolutely terrifying.

“I was watching from the hotel window and

it was like an episode of Eastenders.

“I don’t know if anyone got hurt but it’s a real shame as they just the ruined the night for everyone else.”

The two police officers first on scene were injured trying to bring the trouble under control.

And a 28- year- old male PC was taken to Ayr Hospital nursing a broken arm.

His 34- year-old colleague was also assaulted but did not require hospital treatment.

Police said no serious injuries were sustained by those fighting.

M er cure general manager, Lindsay Steele, said: “We can confirm that a wedding party turned in to an altercatio­n outside of the hotel.

“The incident is a police matter and as such we are unable to comment further.”

A police spokesman said: “At around 10.15pm on Saturday police were called to reports of a large scale disturbanc­e near to the Mercure Hotel.

“Two officers were attacked and assaulted while trying to resolve the situation.

“A 28- year- old male officer was taken to Ayr Hospital for treatment to a broken arm and has since been a released.

“Males aged 28 and 29 were arrested and charged and due before Ayr Sheriff Court.

“A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
