Town’s new top- up tap is treat for tots

- Pippa Smith

An initiative to make Ayr a plastic- free environment was launched last week.

With the help of nursery youngsters from Riverbank Scottish Water installed a topup tap in Newmarket Street.

It is part of a national drive to encourage people to stay hydrated and heathy by drinking water from the tap, using refillable bottles.

In the summer the company launched Your Water Your Life to reduce waste and the impact on the environment.

The refill point is the second in Scotland, with others to be launched across the country.

Ruaridh MacGregor from Scottish Water said: “We’re hoping this will cut down single- use plastics and protect the environment. We are rolling this out across Scotland with 10 drinking points in the pilot.

“This is a really interesting location in Ayr because we know that a lot of people use this street.”

Ayr MSP John Scott said: “We are creating a supply of water for public consumption which is absolutely great. It is environmentally friendly and it is a source of clean, fresh Scottish water.

“This is another step towards a plastic- free Ayr environment. Over the long term it will hopefully replace plastic bottles. It is certainly a step in the right direction.

“Providing free access to clear and great- tasting water in Ayr town centre for local people and visitors is a very positive step.”
