Teen is king of the road at removals business

-

He’s been surrounded by trucks and vehicles since he was a baby.

It is probably no wonder then, that Shaun Thomson has become a king of the road while still a teenager.

The petrol head - 19 just three months ago - now has a raft of transport licences under his belt.

The only one that’s missing is permission to drive the biggest artics.

That will be the next target of young Shaun, who now leads an arm of the family removals business.

He is possibly the youngest driver in the UK to have passed various tests on the road and become a certified transport manager.

Shaun now has a European certificate of professional competence in road haulage and can get his name on the operating licence.

He said: “If there are any others, they must have been quick workers.

“You need to be a minimum of 18 for some of the tests.”

Shaun, now of Sundrum, grew up in a country cottage near Dalrymple where his dad Matt’s firm Thomson Removals was born.

Since then the company has shifted to a large base at the old Monsanto plant in Dundonald.

And in recent months it bought Kilmarnock Removals, where Shaun is currently running the show.

His ability has featured in BAR, the trade magazine bible of the British removals business.

Proud mum Liz and dad Matt, both 45, and younger sister Amy, 16, are keen he gets the recognition.

Matt launched Thomsons Removals in 1995 and now the company boasts between 25 and 30 staff.

Mum Liz, who also works with the family firm, said: “Since he joined the company a year ago there has been no stopping him.

“We are all very proud of Shaun and delighted he can carry on with the next generation.”

Last year he gained a forklift licence and class 2 lorry permit.

This allows him behind the wheel of the company’s biggest rigid 18 ton trucks, the same size as a double decker bus.

Shaun, a keen online gamer, said: “I reckon I have been behind the wheel since I was about 12, not on the public road, of course.

“I have been surrounded by trucks and I love them.”

His hard work has allowed him to buy a Ford Mustang GT, five litre. And Shaun said: “It was either that or a mortgage for a flat. I am afraid I decided to blow it all on the car.”
