Christmas dinner at home or dining out?

These people crave home comforts

- Stephen Houston

Some people have never done it. And some would think nothing of dining out in style at a hotel or restaurant for their Christmas Day feast evermore.

We took the turkey temperature on the festive streets of Ayr to find out what’s best – to cook at home or have someone look after you?

Probably unique in this feature, all four candidates are firmly in the stay at home camp.

Joyce Orr of Ayr, retired from South Ayrshire Council, said: “We always have it at home because all the family come together and we usually have traditional turkey and all the trimmings. In all these years I have never been out for my Christmas Dinner.”

Nursing assistant Morag Lafferty, also of Ayr, revealed: “I went out once and I didn’t like it.

It wasn’t as relaxed. You can split the meal and have a wee gap. But I will have chicken – I don’t like turkey. It’s Christmas pudding and brandy sauce for afters.”

Prestwick lady Moira Gemmell said the family used to go out for years, but she said: “We would go to the likes of Ellisland because that got me my once a year off cooking.

“It has been at my house for years after that, but now I have a grandson and my daughter Lynne is cooking the turkey this year.”

Shaun Cowie is a manager in the food trade – but he will be at home with family. He has lived in Ayr for eight years and said: “All the family get together at my mum’s house in Cannock, Birmingham, the only time all of us get together at the same time. It will be turkey and beef.”

But I will have roast chicken . . . I don’t like the turkey
