County visit is not a title decider just yet, warns boss McCall

- Stuart Wilson

Ian McCall has urged his players to brush off title talk and put Ross County to the sword.

Ayr can go four points clear with a game in hand by winning at Somerset on Saturday.

But McCall isn’t buying into hype of an early championship crunch.

He said: “I’m hearing all sorts about this being an early- season decider.

“People are in danger of getting a bit carried away with themselves.

“We’re not even at the halfway point, so it’s just ridiculous to talk like that.

“It’s not like we’re going down the stretch like the final nine of the Masters.

“There’s a long way to go.”

Ian McCall admits he has “no need” to change a winning formula as Ayr limber up for their Ross County crunch.

The Honest Men are still glowing in the aftermath of their 5- 0 win at Tannadice last week.

And it will be same again as Ayr bid to extend their lead at the top on Saturday.

McCall said: “The boys are in great nick and the positive is we don’t have to rush anyone back from injury.

“Mark Kerr, Alan Forrest and Jamie Adams are all still struggling with minor things – but there’s no pressure on us to have them back.”

Ayr remained top of the Championship at the weekend despite being idle after Friday night’s telly call- off against Inverness.

Ref Craig Thomson pulled the plug after visiting boss, John Robertson, raised huge concerns over conditions.

McCall said: “To be fair, when big Ross Doohan was asked to take some goal kicks it was nigh on impossible.”

United have requested the game is replayed on Tuesday, December 18.

However, it’s understood Inverness are less than keen on that option.
