New headmaster sets out his stall

Docherty era begins proper at Marr College

- Stephen Houston

The acting head at Marr College has been cemented in the role.

George Docherty had been seconded to Troon in August from Prestwick Academy where he was depute head.

The design and technology teacher has been inspirational in his few months in Troon after being brought in as a temporary for the retired head Elaine McGregor- Sloman.

An initial draft of advertising drew seven candidates for the £ 72,804 role . . . but all of them failed to make the right impression at interview.

Mr Docherty has been keen to involve the 920- pupil school in the community and to communicate better, which his predecessor flopped at.

McGregor- Sloman left the school after seven years in charge and was not universally admired.

In a letter to parents Mr Docherty announced he was delighted to become permanent head.

He said: “It is an honour and a privilege to be continuing to build on the success and achievements of the school following my initial acting post.

“My vision for the school is to create

a vibrant and successful learning community where everyone feels valued and included and young people benefit from a wide range of opportunities and experiences to develop their skills for learning and for life.”

It is hoped he can raise the level of achievement within the school, which is at the top of the table in exam grades in South Ayrshire.

But he also insists the new regime at Marr College is not just about qualifications, saying: “I believe that school should be a happy, caring, respectful and purposeful learning environment and that all staff should strive to nurture and support our learners to realise their full potential.

“We should always endeavour to show our young people that we believe in them, respect them and are proud of their success and achievements.”

Mr Docherty has introduced a head teacher “surgery” every month where parents can drop in and give feedback good and bad.
