Nature in close- up in touring exhibition
Karl Blossfeldt: Art Forms in Nature, a Hayward Gallery touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre, London, will open in the Dick Institute on Saturday.
The exhibition presents an original portfolio of 40 photogravures from 1932, entitled ‘ Wundergarten der Natur’, edited by the artist and published in the year of his death.
It presents an opportunity to see a set of Blossfeldt’s signature close- up images of plants and flora.
Celebrated by the surrealists and early modernists, Blossfeldt ( 18651932) is regarded as one of the defining photographers of the 20th century for his exceptional contribution to the art through his intricate botanical photographs.
During his career, which spanned over three decades and included 6000 photographs, Blossfeldt developed home- made cameras and lenses which enabled him to magnify his subjects by up to 30 times.
In doing so he revealed the underlying structures of nature, which until then remained unexplored.
Karl Blossfeldt: Art Forms in Nature is a free exhibition and runs until May 11.
The Dick Institute’s opening hours are: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am- 6pm, Thursdays from 1pm- 8pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am- 4pm.
