SPOILT FOR CHOICE

Not a bad problem for boss to have as Ayr break 40-point barrier

- STUART WILSON

Ian McCall insists he CAN keep his newlook squad happy as they bid for the title.

Ayr, who drafted in three January window signings, are also set to welcome back a host of crocks.

And that could provide McCall wilth some welcome selection headaches.

He said: “We needed new faces, so it’s a nice problem.

“When I turned to the bench at Alloa, it was great to see boys like Craig Moore, Nicky Cadden and Robbie Crawford sat there.

“Hopefully everyone can stay happy.

“We’re all in this together and we’re going to need the full squad between now and the end of the season.”

Cadden joined fellow loan signing Calvin Miller in making his debut at Alloa while Aaron Muirhead earned his first start.

And with Mark Kerr and Jamie Adams in the frame to return a week on Saturday, things are suddenly looking a lot rosier.

McCall said: “We’re getting people back at the key part of the season so the timing couldn’t be better.

“I always said a squad of 18 was what we needed.

“There are only three or four who have made themselves automatic starters and I make no apology for that.

“Two of the best five strikers in Scotland are playing in this division – and we have one of them in Lawrence Shankland – so he’s a special case.

“But everyone knows they have to work hard to get in this team.”

And McCall admits he can now start to focus fully on the fight for promotion after Ayr broke the magical 40-point barrier on Saturday.

He smiled: “It was nice to get that one out of the way.

“We’ll now look at the top four as our aim and who knows after that?” •Mark McKenzie was on target as Ayr’s reserves drew 1-1 at Airdrie on Monday.
