Movies are back
Cinema is set for a bold return to Prestwick for the first time in more than 40 years. A pop- up event aimed at families will hit screens this Sunday.
Friends of the Broadway, who are bidding to revive the iconic venue, will stage a test run at the RAFA Club.
The group, which already screens small- scale events for the town’s Dementia Friendly organisation, is now bidding to branch out.
It follows a cash grant for a raft of screening equipment.
The charity of lotto winners Colin and Christine Weir is supporting the venture, which hopes to re- open the Broadway as a “multipurpose” venue. Lorraine Tait, manager for The Weir Charitable Trust, said: “We are delighted to support this fantastic project to enable the group to offer additional accessible screenings to community groups in a relaxed atmosphere.”
The free pop- up event, which will screen children’s box office smash Finding Nemo, runs from 2pm with a bar available.
It marks the first ‘ Broadway’ screening since November, 1976, when One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest brought down the curtain on the famous venue.
Broadway treasurer Eilssa Wilson said: “It will also mark the first opportunity for Prestwick residents to become members of our group and have a say in our future plans.
