UP FOR GRABS

‘ Players must fight for a jersey’

- STUART WILSON

Ian McCall will put starting places up for grabs this week as he challenges his squad to return to the top of the Championship.

With title rivals Ross County in Irn Bru Cup action, victory for Ayr at Morton would send them back to the summit.

And McCall insists his newlook side are all vying for game time – with very few names safe on his teamsheet.

The boss said: “It will be a case of who does well in training.

“We have three or four automatic picks, but the rest of team now provides real options.

“For example, it’s very hard to leave Robbie Crawford out of any Ayr United team.

“He got a rest at Alloa but comes right back into the reckoning here.”

Fi t- again Jamie Adams is due to make his long- awaited return to the squad at Cappielow after rejoining training.

McCall added: “It’s a huge boost just having Jamie available.

“He’s a massive presence and gives us another great option.”

Meanwhile, McCall has praised his players’ reaction to the shock cup exit at the hands of Auchinleck Talbot.

He said: “It was a dark day for us but I can’t fault how the lads have responded.

“We can only focus on ourselves now – it’s not a matter of looking at those around us.

“Win our games and we’ll be in the mix – that would be a

tremendous achievement.”

• Ayr are running the rule over Danish keeper Simon Boehme.

The 22- year- old, who plays in the American college system, is spending a week on trial at Somerset.
