Butcher blaze boss tells of power surge

-

He said: “The building is unsafe at the moment, I can only stand outside and look in.

“The fire brigade had to pull some of the ceiling down to douse the flames and they had to knock holes in my roof to get the hoses in.

“The roof is wooden timber so they said the whole thing went up in minutes.

“It caught so quickly but if it wasn’t for them the whole place would have been completely destroyed.

“The fireman said he doesn’t think there is any structural damage, but then he’s not a structural engineer.

“I’m determined to get it back up and running as soon as possible.

“I’ve got staff that rely on the income. I employ four members of staff plus my wife helps out and my daughter works a Saturday.

“I’ve been talking to my insurance but I won’t know anymore until the loss adjuster comes, then we’ll have a better idea of a timescale.

“The only blessing is that nobody was hurt, because it could have been a whole lot worse.

“The ferocity of it could have really hurt somebody.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 12.08pm on Saturday, July 29, to reports of a fire within a shop on High Street, Maybole.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances to the scene, where crews extinguished the fire.

“There were no casualties. Crews left at 5.19pm.”

A spokesman for Scottish Power said: “We are aware of the incident and investigations are currently ongoing.”
