A good choice of walk for ramblers

-

On Sunday, July 7, Ayr & District Rambling Club will offer a choice of walks. The higher- level walk will start at the Gogo Glen, Largs, going uphill immediately on the track to Greeto Bridge.

After one mile the track is left behind and a climb takes us up to Auchenmaid Craigs. Walking parallel to the Firth of Clyde, Wooy Hill, Langley Hill and Girtley Hill are climbed in succession.

After crossing Bessel Moor, there is some further ascent before reaching Rowantree Hill. On the return, if weather is favourable, the group will detour and follow the Greeto Glen back down to the bridge.

This is a strenuous walk of about nine miles. If the weather is kind, there will be spectacular views.

To join this walk, meet at the Millbrae car park in Ayr at 8.50am. For details, contact Iain McKenna on 07553 720582.

The easier option will be a circular route going round Loch Trool on waymarked paths, tracks and minor road.

The walk starts at Caldons car park and passes the former campsite before climbing up through the trees and then descending to get the first glimpse of Loch Trool.

The route continues on the Southern Upland Way on the south side of the loch, with views across to Glen Trool Lodge and Bruce’s Stone.

Near the head of the loch, the trail climbs more steeply before sloping gently down to an attractive glen.

The route later follows a minor road, with a detour to visit Bruce’s Stone. After about 1.5 miles, it joins a trail on the left through the trees that leads back to Caldons car park.

As this is a short walk ( 5.25 miles), there is an option to add a four- mile loop to Stroan bridge and back along the Water of Trool.

Meet at the Millbrae car park in Ayr at 8.50am.
