Sudden death could close building firm

- RYAN CARROLL

A business could be set to close after 120 years of trading.

Building company JD Thomson and Sons was founded in 1899.

But we have been told the firm has gone out of business, just six weeks after the sudden death of co- owner Thomas Thomson.

Brothers Thomas and James took over the Maybole business after their father died several years ago.

But on May 24 Thomas, 58, died suddenly at his Maybole home.

It has been rumoured that James was struggling to run the business after the tragic death.

The company declined an interview when approached.

A source told the Post: “One of the sons died suddenly just a few weeks ago so that was possibly the impetus.

“I’m told he wasn’t getting money in. Folk weren’t paying him on time.

“Apparently a lot of people owed him money so that won’t have helped.

“And if they weren’t playing him then they would obviously have a problem paying suppliers.

“But now I’m hearing that some of the folk that were working with them are already starting a new job, as if they are starting from scratch again.

“I’ve heard it was a new company so maybe they’ve formed something else.

“This is just rumours but it’s all quite strange.”

Another source told us that locals would not miss the company.

There had been an ongoing dispute about workers leaving their vans on the street and causing traffic problems.

It was suggested that the company could have dealt with the situation a lot better.

They told the Post: “I don’t think a lot of people in Maybole are too bothered.

“We were constant l y complaining about them keeping their vans on the road.

“The road changed to a oneway to help traffic but it didn’t matter because they just kept the vans there.

“It caused a lot of aggro in the town with the residents.

“I also heard that subcontractors had been having issues with the firm.”

Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP Jeane Freeman said: “I am saddened to hear about the closure of a long- standing and respected Maybole business after so many years of trading.

“I understand that the Thomson family have recently suffered a bereavement and I offer them my heartfelt condolences.”

I’m told he wasn’t getting money in. Folk weren’t paying on time.
